Chemical sensors are widely used nowadays for the detection and determination of a variety of chemical, biological and environmental species. In this regard, carbon paste electrodes are attractive due to their high sensitivity, ease of preparation and low cost. This work presents an introduction for chemical sensors with special emphasis on carbon paste electrodes and their application in drug analysis. It also covers recent advances in the use of carbon paste electrodes in the electrochemical analysis of enzymes, organic and inorganic pollutants. Recently, doping the carbon paste with a chemical modifier has attracted the researchers' attention for the design of a new generation of sensors that are inherently sensitive and selective towards electroactive species of interest. For example, we study carbon paste electrodes modified with ion exchangers for the potentiometric determination of doxycycline hydrochloride in pure solutions and pharmaceutical preparations in batch and flow injection conditions. Considering the progress that has been achieved in this field, carbon paste electrodes are expected to play an essential role in environmental monitoring and drug analysis.

These aspects of high-area carbon electrode behaviour arise from properties of the interphasial double-layer at which electrosorption and charge accommodation can take place, with the latter observably influencing the former. For simple aromatic heterocyclic compounds, such carbon material exhibits high effectiveness for electrosorptive removal and, importantly, major changes of extents of sorption with applied potential or current, and high specific area carbon cloth electrodes exhibit large capacitance density enabling them to be used as Supercapacitor electrodes. In the present study carbon aerogel electrodes was developed to treat mercury-contaminated waters.

A Yablochkov candle consists of a sandwich of two long carbon blocks, approximately 6 by 12 millimetres in cross-section, separated by a block of inert material such as plaster of paris or kaolin. There is a small piece of fuse wire or carbon paste linking the two carbon blocks at the top end. The assembly is mounted vertically into a suitable insulated holder. On application of the electric supply, the fuse wire ''blows'' and strikes the arc. The arc then continues to burn, gradually consuming the carbon electrodes (and the intervening plaster) as it does so. The first candles were powered by a Gramme machine. On disconnecting the supply, the arc extinguishes. It can not be restarted, as there is now no fuse wire between the electrodes. Once switched off or consumed, the candle must be replaced. Electrodes last about two hours. The advantage of the design over other carbon arc designs is that it removes the need for a mechanical regulator to maintain the appropriate distance between the carbon blocks to sustain the arc.
